Since being diagnosed with clinical depression a long time ago, I have benefited from drug therapy but must concur that the biggest boosts have been from social interaction-in very small doses. For me the pills give me the energy to come out of the room/cave/trappings of my own mind and allow myself treatment.T.Allenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07288157852760931385noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32631872426339355.post-20311588155972287922009-05-09T16:51:00.000-04:002009-05-09T16:51:00.000-04:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.John Byrneshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16107788755438630249noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-32631872426339355.post-13165763563031996702009-02-17T01:47:00.000-05:002009-02-17T01:47:00.000-05:00Hey Anonymous,I love animals. I already had a cat and he thought that was great (he would have preferred a dog, but can't have one right now).

Taking care of something gives a person purpose. Following my suicide attempt, I faced a sudden fall from grace as if all of the good deeds I'd done went unnoticed. Now, I became a selfish pariah who would laden so many friends and family with fear, worry and grief over losing the person they wanted to believe I was. We live in an age of armchair psychiatrists who even with the best of intentions somehow further the depth of misconceptions surrounding mental illness. But, who am I to shed light on the complexities of it all, I *am* the mentally ill.

I lit my candle and I thought of you and of others. Thanks for sharing your story. I know it sounds completely out there, but the first time I worked in the yard until I started to smell, broke a few nails without flinching and actually got dirty. I stepped into the shower and bawled at how cathartic if felt to be unkempt, at how liberating it felt to be smelly and moreover my husband, my children-they all seemed okay with me, even happy for me.
